Home Health – Frequently Asked Questions

What are home health services?

Home health care provides medical treatment for an illness or injury. The goal is to help you recover, regain your independence and become as self-sufficient as possible.

Who is eligible for home health care?

There are several requirements for receiving home health care. You must have a doctor prescribe home health care. You must need either skilled nursing care on an intermittent basis or therapy services which include physical, occupational or speech. You must be restricted in your ability to leave home otherwise known as “homebound”. Your homebound status must be certified by a physician. This means that you require the help or supervision of another person, or you use a supportive device such as a cane or walker. You can leave the home as often as you need for medical treatment. You are allowed brief and infrequent absences from the home for some non-medical reasons such as an occasional trip to the barber/beauty shop or a walk around the block.

Will my insurance cover it?

Medicare, medical assistance and most health insurances cover skilled home health care, however each policy is different. Some may require preauthorization of services or co pays or limit the number of home visits. Nearly all insurances require that you meet homebound criteria to be eligible for home health care.

Does my doctor have to order home health care?

Yes, physician orders are required for skilled home care: nurses, therapists, social worker, or home health aide.

How often will you come to my home?

The frequency of visits will depend on patient needs and the physician orders. A plan of care is written and discussed with the patient on admission.

How soon will the services start?

Services usually start within 24 hours of Traditional Home Health and Hospice’s receipt of the physician referral unless the doctor has ordered a specific date for services to begin.

How do I get in touch with you?

My doctor is ordering home health care for me; can I request Traditional Home Health and Hospice by name?

Yes. Federal law gives patients the freedom to choose their home health care providers under Medicare.
